Sony has confirmed that its PlayStation VR (PS VR) device has sold 915,000 units till February 19 since its launch in October last year. Sony’s sales numbers for the PS VR are impressive considering VR gaming is still at a nascent stage with HTC and Oculus being the other two major players in the space.
According to a research firm data quoted by NYTimes, HTC has managed to sell 420,000 units of Vive and Oculus about 243,000 Rift headsets since their launch. Another thing that works for Sony is the comparatively lower price point. In comparison with HTC and Oculus that needs about $1200-$1500 of investment to purchase the headset and a decent PC, PS VR just needs the PS4 console and the whole package can be purchased for under $800.
Another key attribute to PS VR’s success is the access to VR titles, which is more than 100 currently and is expected to be more than double by end of this year.
The PS VR system is currently available in 64 countries and will soon go on sale in the Indian market with two SKUs – one with a camera for Rs. 41,990 and one without for Rs. 37,990.
