Sony has unveiled their latest console, upgrade to the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 5 Pro. As per Sony, the PS5 Pro was developed with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind. The PS5 Pro is equipped with several key performance upgrades to elevate the gaming experience. The new console comes with an upgraded GPU with 67% more compute units than the current PS5 and 28% faster memory, resulting in up to 45% faster rendering.
Sony has also enhanced the ray tracing capabilities, allowing for more dynamic reflections and refractions of light. On the PS5 Pro, ray tracing operates at double, and sometimes triple, the speed of the current PS5. Sony has also introduced the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling technology that uses machine learning to add exceptional detail and provide super sharp image clarity.
These enhancements ensure that PS5 Pro delivers stunning graphics at high frame rates. Additionally, PS5 Pro continues to support over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, with the PS5 Pro Game Boost feature potentially stabilizing or enhancing performance on supported PS4 and PS5 titles. Select PS4 games will also benefit from Enhanced Image Quality, offering improved resolution on the PS5 Pro. The PS5 Pro will launch with Wi-Fi 7, and it will support VRR and 8K gaming in regions that accommodate these technologies.
Many games will receive free updates to optimize them for the PS5 Pro, marked with a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label. Upcoming titles from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners that will benefit from these updates include “Alan Wake 2,” “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” “Demon’s Souls,” “Dragon’s Dogma 2,” “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” “Gran Turismo 7,” “Hogwarts Legacy,” “Horizon Forbidden West,” “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart,” “The Crew Motorfest,” “The First Descendant,” “The Last of Us Part II Remastered,” and more.
While the PS5 Pro retains the same design of the PS5 family, it accommodates its enhanced specs within the same height and width as the current PS5 model. Players have the option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive or swap out console covers when they become available. The PS5 Pro is fully compatible with existing PS5 accessories, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore. The user interface and network services remain consistent with the PS5.
The PS5 Pro will be available this holiday season at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (including tax). Each console will come with a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a pre-installed copy of “Astro’s Playroom.” The PS5 Pro will be available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the existing PS5 Disc Drive separately.
