Xiaomi is known for its smartphones, however, the company also manufactures nifty tech and lifestyle gadgets that are useful in daily life. Today we are reviewing one such device called the Mi Water TDS Tester. The TDS in this does not mean Tax Deducted at Source, jokes apart. The TDS stands for Total dissolved solids that are generally found in water. TDS is any salt, mineral or metal that is found in the water. The water that we receive for drinking passes through a filtration process and as a result, may contain dissolved solids. A large number of dissolved solids, more than 1000 mg/L in the water is not suitable for drinking and can be harmful to health.
What is a Water TDS Tester?
As per Indian Standard 10500, the maximum quantity of TDS in the water is 500 mg/L which means it is safe to consume. A water TDS tester is generally used to test the quantity of TDS in your drinking water. If you are using a water purifier or filter at home, the TDS tester will help you to evaluate the quality of water it delivers and whether it needs some cleaning or maintenance.

The Mi Water TDS tester is a thermometer type device which is simple to use. The device is all white in colour and works on 2 x LR44 button cells (not included in the package). The Mi TDS Water tester can detect the TDS quantity of water in the range of 0-9990 ppm. The sensor of the device is anti-rust and anti-corrosive, also the device is IPX6 certified for water resistance. There is a monochrome LCD that displays the TDS reading.
To start using Mi Water TDS tester, insert the two LR44 button cells in the device. Once done, press the TDS button on the device. The device should give a reading of ‘0’. Now insert the device in a glass of water for 3-5 seconds. The TDS reading will change and will be displayed on the LCD.
We tested the Mi Water TDS tester on two sources of water. We filled two glasses of water, one with Borewell water or groundwater and the other with purified water from a home water purifier. The results were quite evident, the borewell water gave a reading of 288 mg/L and the purified water had a reading of 42 mg/L. Although the water in both the glasses is fit to consume, the one with a lower TDS value is more fit.
