Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery 6

Stellar is a specialist in file recovery solutions and improving from last year’s Phoenix Photo Recovery 5 is the sixth iteration of the software. It’s touted as the “single solution to get back all your lost memories i.e. photos, videos & music files.” But is it worth the claim? We take a detailed look.

Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery 6 is a really simple tool. Although Stellar says that the new software features an improved user interface, we found it to be strikingly similar to the previous version. The main window has three options – a big fat button to start recovering content, an option to create an image of a drive that supposedly has bad sectors and resume recovery to understandably resume the recovery process.

The software is as easy as 1-2-3. Just pop in the media drive from which the files are to be recovered and hit the recover button. The software automatically detects a removable drive but in case you want to retrieve some content from the internal hard drive, you can select the desired partition as well.

To try out the feature, we took a 2GB flash drive and formatted it. A scan of the drive was initiated by the software and after a detailed scan of the drive, it was able to detect the missing files. A user even has the option to export the retrieve the contents to the location of his choice after a successful recovery.

The newer version however, has its advantages. For instance, it’s advanced scan is 30 percent faster than the previous iteration. There’ even an option to extract thumbnails from corrupt drives or recovery of files with actual filenames. The Phoenix Photo Recovery 6 also comes with improved file format support, HD-MOV video support and even support for RAW images from cameras.

All said and done, Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery 6 is handy tool. It’s not a software that you’ll use that often but having it in your arsenal is a good thing as you’ll have something to rely on. But if you already own the previous version, there’s not much for you to try new

The Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery 6 pricing starts from $39.

Rating:
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Incremental update over the last version
