You buy a $600 phone and you still can’t protect it from dust and water. Samsung knows how it feels, which is why they’ve announced the Galaxy S4 Active – a waterproof and dustproof variant of the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4 Active is IP67 standard compliant that allows users to use the phone in a depth of up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes and keeps dust at bay.
To gain something you ought to lose something and Samsung has made some sacrifice on the hardware side by integrating a 5-inch full HD TFT LCD compared to original Galaxy S4’s full HD Super AMOLED display. The camera has also got downgrade in terms of megapixel, which is now 8MP from 13MP but gains an Aqua shooting mode to shoot images and videos underwater. The phone runs on Qualcomm’s fast Snapdragon 600 1.9GHz quad-core processor and features 2GB RAM, LTE support, 2MP front-facing camera, Wi-Fi, IrDA, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 16GB internal memory, microSD card slot and 2600mAh battery.
Samsung has also kept most of the software optimizations found on the Galaxy S4 intact like the Smart Scroll and Smart Pause, S Translator, S Health, WatchON, Samsung Link, Samsung Hubs, Air View and Air Gesture.
The phone will be available in the coming weeks in US and Sweden in three colour options – Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare and will give a glimpse of the device at the Premiere event in London on June 20.
