Google has struck a deal with DLF IPL to stream Twenty20 matches live on YouTube that starts from March 12 (60 matches in 45 days). Well, the matches won’t exactly be live (it will be deferred by 5 mins) but the fact that YouTube users anywhere in the world will be able to enjoy it will be a big win for cricket lovers. Americans however, will be deprived of the live streaming as there will be re-broadcast options available. I’m not certain why USA has been left out but it could be because of an agreement with DirecTV (they have the rights for 2009/10 IPL tournaments).
Users watching on YouTube will get some benefits, like watching in an exclusive “YouTube View” – in addition to different camera angles – player interviews, wickets or sixes of the match and more. In short, a user will have more liberty to watch different and more content than watching it live on a television.
As for the revenues, Google and IPL were mum about the intrinsic details but confirmed both the companies will share revenues earned from sponsorships and advertising.
Additionally, mobile users will be able to access short clips of highlights and other IPL related videos on YouTube’s mobile site.
