Microsoft has launched Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition on Steam and the Microsoft Store. The release follows the mobile version, which has been available on Google Play and the Apple App Store since October 2024.
The PC version adds mouse control, full keyboard navigation, a refined UI, and enhanced 4K visuals, building on the existing mobile experience rather than introducing a separate game.
Crossplay lets players move between phone, tablet, and PC. Anyone already playing on mobile can carry over progress by linking their account through Settings > Account > Bind Account before launching the PC version for the first time.
Players with an active PC Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass subscription receive a bonus reward pack containing one Monthly Pass Token, one Custom Resource Chest, ten Universal 60-Minute Speed-Ups, 1,000 Empire Coins, and an exclusive player portrait frame, delivered through in-game mail after signing in with an Xbox account.
Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition is available now as a free download on Steam and the Microsoft Store.
FAQs
Is this the same as the Age of Empires PC Games?
No. Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition runs the same game as the mobile app, just with PC-native controls and visuals layered on top. The numbered entries — Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, and Age of Empires IV — are separate, full-price PC titles built around traditional real-time strategy (RTS) gameplay: single-player campaigns, skirmish modes, and ranked multiplayer ladders.
How does the gameplay differ?
Age of Empires Mobile is structured as a free-to-play kingdom-builder, with base development, alliance-based warfare, and live-service progression systems. The mainline PC games are session-based RTS titles without ongoing live-service mechanics or in-app purchases tied to progression.
Which one should you play?
If the goal is competitive RTS skirmishes, campaign content, or ranked multiplayer, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition or Age of Empires IV are the better fit. If the goal is a free, long-term, cross-device strategy game that can be played casually across phone, tablet, and PC, Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition fits that purpose. They serve different play styles rather than one replacing the other.
