Facebook today announced to acquire Whatsapp, one of the biggest messaging app available on mobile devices today. Facebook will buy the cross-platform app for $19 billion, which includes $4 billion in cash, $12 billion of Facebook shares and additional $3 billion in restricted stocks that will vest over four years subsequent to closing of the deal.
Despite the acquisition, Whatsapp claims there will be no change to the service and will operate independently, which means there will be no ads and people will have to pay for their subscription after the expiry of their service.
To put the service into perspective, Whatsapp has over 450 million active users each month with over 70 percent access the service every day and sees 1 million new registered users each day.
