Datawind announces Rs. 7,999 UbiSurfer MID in India, we go-hands on

April 30, 2010 By Kunal Gangar 10 Comments

Datawind UbiSurfer

Datawind launched its UbiSurfer Mobile Internet Device in India. UbiSurfer is touted for its ‘Ubiquitous Surfing’ capability that offers internet on the go with an integrated SIM card slot and a cellular modem.

UbiSurfer’s specs sheet includes a 7-inch WVGA (800×480) display, WinCE or Linux OS, 128MB RAM, 1GB Flash memory, earphone jack, integrated speakers, Wi-Fi, LAN, trackpad, an 80-key keyboard, couple of USB ports and SD card slot to expand memory. Ubisurfer users also get up to 50GB of online storage.

Datawind has tied up with Tata to bundle Photon (CDMA 1X) connections with the device. Consumers buying UbiSurfer will get the first year for free that includes 30 hours of unlimited access per month. Calculation by hours and not data transfer is somewhat strange because one user consumer surfing a website will transfer
less data as compared to a user watching a YouTube video for the same duration.

UbiSurfer is expected to reach retail stores by next week carrying a price tag of Rs. 7,999.

We also spent some brief time on the device and this is what we think. UbiSurfer’s 7-inch screen maybe small by laptop standards but I think it hits the sweet spot who wants a larger screen than a mobile phone but something smaller and lightweight than a netbook. Although it has an 80-key keyboard, the keys felt a bit small and could be an issue for users with fat fingers. UbiSurfer’s performance is good when you’re operating with a single app but UbiSurfer tends to suffer when you want to multitask with say, 3-4 apps. Its 128MB RAM is quite evident here.

Overall, UbiSurfer does have some drawbacks but we think its aggressive pricing and its anywhere internet capability will help Datawind shift number of units.

This is a new product in India. But in UK it is a very famous product with good customer service. I hope they will provide the same service here in India as well.
There are many things are not still clear. Particularly the buyers are concerned about its unlimited Internet plan by paying Rs-99/month. There is no clear details about this on their website. Let us wait and see about their progress in India. This is a good product for that price.
