Japanese business daily, Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo and Dentsu will soon launch a video distribution service on Wii, opening up a new revenue stream for both the companies. The content offered to the users will mostly be cartoons, entertainment programs and the service is expected to arrive in Japan early next year, which will be followed by other regions.
However, somethings aren’t clear. For instance, how will Nintendo deliver the content? Where the downloaded content will be stored? Will the content be region specific?
If the content is downloaded in the Wii console itself, internal as well as a memory card won’t be sufficient for an avid video watcher. There is a strong feeling that a HDD based Wii is coming soon.
UPDATE: Nintendo is looking at streaming videos, which kicks out downloading as an option :(.
