Qualcomm has officially announced its latest flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. As the newest System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for premium smartphones, this processor is set to power the next wave of high-end Android devices. The announcement highlights key advancements in CPU performance, graphics rendering, on-device artificial intelligence, and professional-grade video capabilities.
Core Performance: The 3rd Gen Qualcomm Oryon CPU
At the core of the new chipset is the 3rd generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU. According to the company, this new CPU architecture delivers a 20% performance increase compared to the previous generation. For the end-user, this improvement is expected to translate into faster application load times, more fluid multitasking, and enhanced overall system responsiveness.
Graphics and Gaming Enhancements with the Adreno GPU
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 features an upgraded Adreno GPU, which Qualcomm states provides a 23% boost in graphics rendering performance. This development is particularly relevant for mobile gaming, where higher performance can lead to smoother frame rates and more detailed visuals. The company also reported a 25% improvement in ray tracing efficiency, aiming to deliver more realistic lighting and reflections in supported games.
On-Device AI and the Hexagon NPU
Artificial Intelligence processing receives a notable upgrade with the latest Hexagon NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which is reportedly 37% faster. This NPU is designed to handle complex AI and machine learning tasks directly on the device.
Qualcomm is using this hardware to power what it calls “agentic AI,” a system where a device’s assistant can perform tasks.
The latest premium offering in the Snapdragon 8 Elite series will be featured in flagship devices from global OEMs and smartphone brands, including Honor, iQOO, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, POCO, realme, REDMI, RedMagic, ROG, Samsung, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE. New devices will be launched in the coming days.
