Google and WhatsApp have entered in to a partnership that will provide Android users with chat backups on Google Drive without consuming the storage capacity from 12 November 2018. Also, WhatsApp backups that have been not updated on the Google Drive from more than a year will be automatically removed from the Google Drive. Hence it is recommended that you backup your WhatsApp chats now on the Google Drive. The advantage of backing up chats on Google Drive is that in case you change your Android smartphone, and install WhatsApp on the new device, your chats and media will automatically get restored on the new device, of course this needs an internet connection.
Backing up WhatApp chats on Google Drive:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Tap Back up to Google Drive and select any of the one backup frequency from Daily, Weekly or Monthly. We would recommend daily.
- Select a Google account that you want the backups to be stored to. If you are already using the Gmail App or logged in to Gmail in your Android device, just select the account. If you don’t have a Google account, tap Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials. Please remember the Google account you’re using for the backup.
- Tap Back up over to choose the network you wish to use for backup.
