NIS 2010 Review

With the release of Norton Internet Security 2009, Symantec made a significant change and boost to the overall image of Norton security products. Continuing the legacy of 2009, the latest version is light on resources with clean and easy interface. Installing the security suite is a straight forward process. No need to configure or select any sort of components.

Symantec has somewhat overhauled the UI to make it a little quicker but the inside is what it matters for a proper security suite. With this version Symantec goes a step ahead and focuses on protection. NIS 2010 features a new technology model used for reputation-analysis. This tech leverages the wisdom of Norton’s tens of millions of participating customers to derive highly accurate security ratings for virtually every file available on the Internet. This empowers Symantec users to make far better choices about the software they download and install on their computers.

The core protection of NIS 2010 secures your PC against viruses, spyware, Trojan horses, worms, bots and rootkits. The two-way firewall also protects your system from being hacked on the network by any unauthorized access. For up-to-the minute protection, NIS 2010 constantly updates its database every 5-15 minutes, which can be pushed to your machine via Pulse updates (Live updates need to be enabled first).

NIS 2010 Dashboard

The dashboard is the home screen of NIS 2010 that provides you a glance of the software process. It provides useful information about your update definitions detail and subscription license detail. With the dashboard you can control the three protection components of your system, that are, Computer, Network and Web.

NIS 2010 Insight

Norton Insight Network is another tool that uses date from Norton community to identify threats and other malicious activities. NIS 2010 also has an application rating tool that tells you running apps and if they are from a trusted source. The virus scanner of NIS 2010 is good and scans the system really fast. This version also supports Windows 7. Testament to the security provided by NIS2010 is that it recently passed the Virus Bulletin’s VB100 test.

NIS 2010 Application Ratings

Dennis Technology Lab recently tested the effectiveness of 10 well-known security offerings in a real-world anti-malware comparison test. The report [Warning: PDF link] shows that NIS 2010 achieved a perfect detection rate, and was noted as “the only product to do so” defending against all threats and fully protecting the system from attack or compromise. In stark contrast to the Norton results, the report noted that the average detection rate across all products tested was 78 percent. In the test conducted by AV-Test.org, NIS 2010 was able to detect 459,872 samples, yielding an excellent detection score of 99.75 percent.

NIS 2010 Review

As a full security suite, NIS 2010 also features Parental Control. The Parental Control lets you block certain websites; can help you schedule time for your kids to use it and more. This Parental control is powered by Symantec’s own OnlineFamily.Norton. Since it’s a web-based control, it can work on all your computers, and can be controlled from a remote computer by you. Of course the de facto requirement for this is an Internet connection.

Overall, the latest version excels than the previous one and the current competition in many areas. Be it speed, performance, protection, all are handled well by NIS 2010. Priced at Rs. 2,495 for a three PC license and Rs.1,450 for a single PC license, the protection that NIS 2010 provides is good.
