Wow, Google pulled off a big one today. They’ve announced to acquire Motorola Mobility — which Motorola spun off as a separate entity last year — for $12.5 billion or $40 per share. Despite taking over a hardware manufacturer, Google is quick to clarify that Android will still remain an open platform. Motorola will run as a separate unit and will still continue to work with other Android manufacturers.
In fact, it seems patents were Google’s main focus. With many technology companies suing Android and their manufacturers, Motorola’s large patent portfolio could come in handy.
