Symbian Foundation today announced that they’ll no longer develop the Symbian platform but would rather become a simple licensing body. This decision comes after the non-profit organisation failed to capture attention of phone manufacturers except Nokia. However, this does not mean the end of the world’s widely used smartphone OS.
Nokia issued a separate release stating that the development of the Symbian platform will be continued by them and will have no impact on Nokia’s roadmap or estimated shipping dates.
This makes sense as Nokia is the only major mobile manufacturer whose smartphone portfolio depends solely on Symbian.
Nokia last month announced that to forgo Symbian OS versions and adopt Qt as the sole application development framework.
