Nokia today announced its latest development strategy that will unify development environment for Nokia’s smartphone OS – Symbian and MeeGo. Qt will be sole application development framework that will allow developers to deploy their apps quickly to the existing and future range of Symbian devices as well as the MeeGo platform. This ensures a consistency and better integration of application and services amongst Nokia smartphones. Furthermore, Qt’s built-in HTML5 will now be supported by Nokia, confirming that HTML5 content will be compatible with its Symbian or MeeGo devices in the near future.

For Symbian users, Nokia has confirmed that they’ll not consider Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 as different platforms but as one. Since the development will be now based on Qt, Nokia can deliver improvements and updates to Symbian-based products, thus increasing longevity of devices running on Symbian^3.
