Intel, Samsung, Motorola, Alvarion, Beceem and few more have announced to form WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative (WCI) that will work closely with the WiMAX forum to advance the WiMAX technology. The next-gen WiMAX will be known as WiMAX 2 and be built upon the IEEE 802.16m standard adding new capabilities while maintaining backward compatibility.
The 802.16m standard is a follow up to 802.11e and is expected to be finalized by second half of 2010. The newer standard will help to deliver lower latency, increased VoIP capacity and peak rates of more than 300Mbps.
