Sony was the first one to launch an 8-megapixel phone and it seems they will be the first one to create a 12-megapixel phone too. The initial step towards it has already been achieved with the preparation of a 12.25-megapixel CMOS sensor. However, this breakthrough won’t be limited to Sony’s boundaries but will soon be available for sampling to other companies who are willing to join in the megapixel race. The Exmor CMOS camera sensors include three sensors – 5.15 (IMX045PQ), 8.11 (IMX046PQ) and 12.25 megapixels (IMX060PQ) that also has the capability to record video in HD quality.

The availability dates set for these sensors is March 2009 for 12.25 and 5.15 while November 2008 for 8.11 megapixel CMOS sensor.
