Ahead of Game Developers Conference, Ubisoft announced a new tool that will potentially ease and expand the limits of game development. Ubisoft calls it Scalar which basically harnesses the power of cloud computing and frees game developers from hardware limitations while developing the game.
Ubisoft does maintain that it is not a new game engine but rather works alongside it by fragmentizing different game engine elements into microservices so developers can work and deliver on new iterations faster and efficiently. In other words, processing power for a game isn’t tied to a single machine, but to a decentralized computation system that processes in the cloud and delivers to the player, an ever-evolving yet complex rich world with a never-before-seen social experience.
The technology is promising but will be interesting to see how Ubisoft achieves it. However, for now, there’s not much to see about the new technology except taking Ubisoft’s word for it. As for the games, there’s one in development by Ubisoft Stockholm, which will be revealed in the coming months.
For now, check out the short video below.
