Seagate Wireless Plus Review

If you’re the one who likes to watch a lot of movies on mobile devices but are restricted with the limited storage, Seagate has got something that would solve all your storage woes. It’s the Wireless Plus that brings 1TB of enormous storage and can be used to stream on the mobile device through Wi-Fi. If you remember, Seagate had a product named GoFlex Satellite that did the same thing but Seagate has now improved on the available storage and the battery life.

Design:

Seagate’s previous genereation wireless product was a bit clunky but the Wireless Plus is a bit lighter, compact and features a brushed aluminium finish that gives it a premium look. There are two LED indicators on the front of the drive – one signifying the wireless connection and second for power; the side hosts the power button and Seagate’s proprietary port for USB 3.0, which can be hidden with the included plastic casing.

Performance:

Seagate Wireless Plus Review

The Wireless Plus acts as a normal USB 3.0 hard drive but its the wireless capabilities we’re more interested in. To take advantage of that, a user needs to download the Seagate Media app available on the Android Play Store, iOS App Store or the Kindle App Store. Seagate has also developed a dedicated app for Samsung Smart TVs.

Making the drive work is simple. Just connect the Wireless Plus’ SSID from your mobile device and open the downloaded app. The app will find and connect the drive and display all the content.

Users can play video, pictures or music right inside the app or can choose to select any other app to play all the content.

One major drawback of using a wireless storage device previously was the inability to use the internet on the phone or tablet while using the storage device. But with the Wireless Plus and the Seagate Media app, it allows the internet use by choosing the available wireless network and keying in the requisite password. However, on doing this, we found the Wireless Plus app to deactivate the Wi-Fi for the first time and you have to re-enable the Wi-Fi again.

Wireless Plus allows simultaneous streaming to up to 3 devices and though it does take a few seconds initially to buffer the content but once it does, it’s a smooth ride. The estimated battery life claimed by Seagate is 10 hours but in our tests we got close to 8 hours, which is still good enough in our opinion.

Conclusion:
As mentioned before, this is Seagate’s second wireless storage product and they seem to have a clear idea of what consumers want. Wireless Plus is equipped with some huge storage which you can lug around in your pocket or a laptop bag all the time. To add to it, the battery life is decent enough to last a few movies before you’ll have to charge it again.

Seagate Wireless Plus sells in India for Rs. 16,000.

Rating:
Pros: Storage, Allows Internet Usage
Cons: App shuts down Wi-Fi initially when trying to do an internet pass-through
