Taking the CCD sensor from a digital camera, scientists at Caltech have developed a microscopic microscope, small enough to fit in futuristic cell phones. This microscope does not boast any lens found in conventional microscopes but the magnification is possible with a process called microfluidics. It means channeling of fluid flow at incredibly small scales. When mass produced, the microscope will cost just around $10 making it a perfect powerful and a portable tool for diagnosing diseases in third world countries.
