Google Translate app on Android is a handy app but is useless if you have a spotty or no data connection. Good news is Google has addressed that issue with the new update by bringing offline translation support.
Before you backpack to a foreign land just download the language pack you want from a selection of over 50 languages. Admittedly, not as comprehensive as with an online connection, the offline language should be good enough to ask for directions and other simple queries and answers.
The Translate app with offline support is now available for Android 2.3 and above.
