Sony today announced the S Series XQD memory cards that promise to outpace the speed of Compact Flash Cards. Apt for photographers, the S Series XQD achieves a read/write speed of 168MB/s, a megabyte faster than what CF cards offer.
Sony says cameras like Nikon D4 that support the new card specification can capture a continuous burst of 108 RAW frames, about 10.5MB each in file size.
The new S Series cards are available in capacities of 32GB and 64GB and are priced 39,800 yen and 59,800 yen respectively in Japan. As for Europe, the 64GB XQD card is expected this month whereas the 32GB variant will be available in September/October.
