Apple has published a lengthy Q&A regarding the location data issue that has gained some traction in the past few days. Apple says they never meant to track the location of the iPhone and never will. Instead the data cache that was uncovered by researchers is a crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspots that is used to lock in the GPS position of the user when the location is not available, say in indoors or basements.
Although Apple did acknowledge that iPhone shouldn’t store the location data up to a year – as was found in some cases – and will be solved with the upcoming iOS update.
Also, the next major iOS release will add the ability to store the cache in encrypted form on the iPhone.
