Google added Near Field Communications (NFC) support in Android 2.3 to facilitate contactless payments in Android devices. Now they’re expanding the NFC realm that will allow devices to not only read but write NFC tags as well. They’ve released the Android 2.3.3 SDK that will enable developers to create apps that can read and write any standard NFC tag.
Additionally, the SDK also features “advanced intent dispatching” that gives apps more control as to how and when NFC tags can be used and limited support for peer-to-peer connection with other NFC devices.
There’s no word on when Android 2.3.3 will be pushed to devices like Nexus S but Google has confirmed that going forward, most devices launching on Gingerbread will come with 2.3.3.
As for the SDK, it is available for download via Android SDK Manager.
