We have seen NFC-equipped phones and devices to make contactless payments but companies are now exploring to leverage the technology in other areas. Clarion Hotel Stockholm in Sweden has initiated a pilot project that will allow guests to check in to the hotel and even open their room door with the phone.
The project as mentioned is in pilot stages and is being carried out to gather feedback for NFC-related services. Few selected guests were handed out Samsung’s NFC-enabled Star S5230N pre-loaded with the required software. Guests can then check in to the hotel via their phone and directly head to their rooms to open the doors with the digital door keys.
One advantage digital door keys have as compared to a conventional key is that the hotel can reissue the access credentials to the guest, in case the phone is lost or stolen.
