South Korea-based Pantech will be another company that will shift to LCD from AMOLED displays for their phones. Pantech currently sells two smartphones with AMOLED screen but its new smartphones scheduled for 1H 2011 will sport an LCD display, according to an unnamed Pantech executive.
The reason for the switch is the same as HTC’s – supply shortage. Samsung Mobile Display supplies AMOLED panels to Pantech but due to high demand from SMD’s affiliate, Samsung Mobile, SMD cannot meet demand from outside customers.
However, Pantech does plan to use AMOLED in the future. Pantech will use AMOLED panels after the completion of Samsung’s 5.5-gen AMOLED line, which is expected by July next year.
