Nokia might have been the first one to unveil a Symbian^3 device but it will be an Asian vendor who will bring the Symbian^3-equipped phone to the market first. Lee Williams, executive director of Symbian Foundation confirmed to Reuters that a phone running Symbian 3 software will be shipped first by an Asian vendor and not Nokia.
Lee did not reveal the vendor’s name but confirmed that the “Symbian 3 code was nearly ready”.
Symbian is planning to move to Symbian^4 in 2011 and they’re relying on Nokia, who produces the largest number of Symbian products.
“By first quarter 2011 I would expect to have very mature Symbian 4. We are heavily dependent on Nokia’s development efforts”
Nokia is the key contributor to the Symbian software and currently generates more than 90 percent of sales of Symbian phones.
