SSDs are faster but way expensive. HDDs are cheaper and slower when compared to SSDs. Now, Seagate has found a middle way to combine the performance of an SSD and keep the price under affordable levels. The Momentus XT Hybrid HDDs are touted to be the world’s fastest 2.5-inch laptop drive with claims to be 100% or 80% faster than 5,400RPM or 7,200RPM conventional HDDs respectively.
Momentus XT’s high speed is attributed to Seagate’s Adaptive Memory technology. The hybrid drive spins at 7,200RPM, integrates 4GB NAND flash but it’s the Adaptive Memory technology that identifies patterns in how the data is used and copies it on the 4GB SSD for quicker access.
Asus also announced to be the world’s first vendor to provide Momentus XT as an upgrade option on its ROG G73 notebook. In addition to the faster drive, the powerful notebook will feature Intel i7 720Qm quad-core processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory, and ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870 GPU.
