Good news for PS3 users is that Sony will release a new firmware update (v3.21) for PlayStation 3 on April 1. The bad news is – at least for non-slim PS3 console owners – that Sony will strip down the Install Other OS feature. In short, after April 1, PS3 owners who installed Linux on their consoles won’t be able to install it or even access the partition.
Sony says the removal of feature, which has hailed by many until now, is due to security reasons (or apparently due to the latest attempts to hack the system) and users who wish to keep the feature shouldn’t update it.
Not updating however, will come with some caveats. For instance, a user won’t be able to sign into the PlayStation Network, play online games, playback copyright-protected videos and so forth.
