“Fat” PS3 users can’t access PSN, some offline games too

UPDATE: Sony confirms PS3 clock issue.
Original PS3 users have been marred by an unusual error since yesterday. Firstly, millions of PS3 users were unable to connect to PlayStation’s PlayStation Network – which by the way has been confirmed by Sony – and secondly, Kotaku is reporting that few games even in offline mode can’t start and goes back to the XMB interface.
The first problem is understandable as it could have been modifying some settings from Sony’s side preventing access to original PS3 users but games played offline not starting is a bit surprising.
Speculation is that the problem is due to a date bug found in older PS3s triggering the system to automatically set the date to 1999. Maybe a firmware update is in the offing.
