Sony today unveiled a major breakthrough that makes wireless charging more interesting. Their newly developed wireless power transfer system can transfer up to 60W of power up to a distance of 50cm.
The contactless electricity transmission is possible with the help of magnetic resonance. The power recipients such as a TV needs to be assigned an identical resonant frequency and is matched with the magnetic resonance, which transfers electromagnetic energy irrespective of metal objects located between the receiver (TV) and the transmitter.
Sony says the transfer efficiency is approximately 80% or when used with a rectifier drops to – still acceptable – 60%. Passive extender units can also be placed so as to widen the transfer distance without losing efficiency.
Torjus says
Wireless Power and Communication can transfer 160 Watt and have had commercial wireless power products for both sub sea operations and everyday life available for years. See http://www.wpc.no for more information
