Citi has announced to pilot test the NFC (Near Field Communications) payments in Bangalore, India with the introduction of Citi Tap and Pay service. In simpler terms, NFC is a short range wireless communication technology that helps to initiate contactless payments, share content, buy movie tickets and much more all directly from a mobile phone.
For Citi’s Tap and Pay service, they have teamed up with a number of companies like Nokia to sell NFC-enabled 6212 Classic phone with preinstalled Tap and Pay software, Vodafone as the cellular operator, MasterCard for its PayPass contactless payment and security infrastructure and ViVOtech to provide NFC related technologies.
To use this service, a user needs to tap their phone on a contactless reader, key in the amount you want to pay via the installed software, enter the PIN and done. The payment will be charged to a customer’s Citibank MasterCard card.
