Apple unveiled an upcoming enhancement to its repair processes that will revolutionize repair options for customers and independent repair providers. Set to debut with select iPhone models this fall, this enhancement will enable the utilization of used Apple parts in repairs, paving the way for increased product longevity, expanded consumer choices, and reduced environmental impact.
This initiative aims to maintain the high standards of privacy, security, and safety that Apple is known for, while offering customers more flexibility in repair solutions. Used genuine Apple parts will now undergo the same rigorous factory calibration as new parts, ensuring full functionality and security.
Key aspects of this enhancement include the simplification of the repair process, with calibration for genuine Apple parts, new or used, occurring on the device after installation. Additionally, future iPhone releases will offer support for used biometric sensors. Activation Lock, a popular feature designed to deter iPhone theft, will be extended to iPhone parts to prevent stolen devices from being disassembled for parts.
To provide transparency to users, Apple will expand Parts and Service History on iOS to show whether a part is new or used genuine Apple. This complements Apple’s ongoing efforts to improve access to safe and affordable repairs, which includes nearly doubling the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training.
Furthermore, the Self Service Repair program, launched in 2022, continues to expand, offering manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools to individuals with the relevant experience in repairing electronic devices. With support for 40 Apple products in 33 countries and regions, Self Service Repair is helping device maintenance.
