Oppo announced some breakthrough tech during its two days of INNO Day and has kept the best for the last with the Find N foldable phone. Teased by Pete Lau last week, Oppo has revealed more details on the Find N along with its availability and price.
Oppo Find N has a form factor similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold but unlike the Samsung foldable phone, Oppo Find N is more compact and handy to use. The landscape ratio of 8.4:9 lets users do things on its 7.1-inch inner display while the folded 18:9 aspect ratio gives the familiar smartphone experience on its 5.49-inch outer display. The inner 12-layer Serene Display is rated to smoothly fold up to 200,000 times and uses an LTPO panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a touch sampling rate of 1000Hz.
Lau touted the hinge and now we know more about it. Equipped with Flexion Hinge, it boasts 136 components working closely with each other ensuring it works “as smoothly as the joints in the human body.” Moreover, the water-drop hinge design enables the phone display to have a buffer when it folds, which results in a minimal crease and is up to 80% less noticeable compared with other foldable devices. The crease in the middle of the display is one of the biggest pain points, which even companies like Samsung are yet to solve that develops over time.
In addition to the visually pleasing design, it’s the software that is instrumental to a foldable’s success. Oppo claims to have worked to give users a tablet-like experience while using the Find N with features like gestures for side-by-side multitasking, app continuation from the outer display to inner and vice versa, FlexForm mode for the phone to freely stand when unfolded and use it like a mini laptop.
On the hardware side of things, it’s a standard fare for a 2021 flagship with Snapdragon 888 onboard, up to 12GB RAM, 512GB UFS 3.1 internal storage, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, 4500mAh battery with 33W SuperVOOC Flash Charge support, and a triple camera setup with 50MP Sony IMX 766 main sensor, 16 MP ultra-wide lens, 13 MP telephoto lens and selfie cameras on both the inner and outer displays.
Oppo Find N seems like a promising foldable phone but apparently, it won’t leave its homeland. The phone will sell in China only from Dec 23 for RMB 7,699 or about US$1200.
