Seagate Backup Plus Fast

A 3.5-inch external HDD is generally the way to go if you’re looking for terabytes of storage space. Seagate, however, wants to change this with the Backup Plus Fast. The new external HDD not only comes in a compact chassis but also boasts a fast USB 3.0 interface.

While able to store data is the biggest criterion to look for in a portable hard drive, we feel the design of the hard drive is equally important. Good thing here is that Backup Plus Fast has an elegant design. Not the slimmest off the lot but features a premium metal body design. The drive is compact and clean with just an activity LED light on top while USB 3.0 port on the side.

The thick shell is a result of two 2TB hard drives housed in RAID0 configuration, resulting in massive storage capacity. The drive gives about 3.60TB of storage to the user and one of the biggest advantages is that it does not require additional power. The drive draws power from the USB port and if one USB port is not enough, the bundled USB 3.0 Y cable can draw power from two USB ports simultaneously for an uninterrupted performance.

Speaking of performance, the Backup Plus Fast is no slouch. While the rated sequential transfer speed is up to 220MB/s, we got around 180MB/s in our test.

Seagate has named Backup Plus for a reason. Building on the previous generation Backup Plus features, this offering also supports Seagate Dashboard software that enables users to backup their PC, mobile devices and even social media. PC Backup backs up content from the PC while Mobile Backup understandably secures content from a mobile device through a free app. The Social backup saves content from social networking sites like Flickr, Facebook and YouTube and as an added bonus, even allows to post content from the drive to the website.

All said and done, there’s no denying that Backup Plus Fast is a unique offering from Seagate. It packs in 4 terabytes of mammoth storage in a compact design. Add to it, the speedy USB 3.0 support along with software backup features. However, Backup Plus Fast is expensive. If you’re willing to shell out close to around Rs. 21,000, Backup Plus Fast won’t give any reasons to disappoint.

Rating: 4stars
Pros: Fast, Good Performance
Cons: Pricey
