ADATA DashDrive HV610 500GB HDD Review

ADATA HV610

ADATA has been expanding its memory storage offerings for the Indian market. The latest addition to its roster is the DashDrive HV610 USB 3.0 external hard drive. HV610’s claim to fame is its design.

ADATA offers HV610 in two colors – black and white and bundles each drive with a colored cover that comes in options of blue, pink, orange and purple. But more than the variety of colors, it’s the puzzle pieces pattern that gives the drive a distinctive look. To be honest, I’m not much of a fan of the design as compared to the function of the drive but the puzzle pattern looks decent. Plus, the colored cover features grooves on the side that helps to stow the included USB cable. Finally, there’s an LED indicator for the hard drive on the front.

The hard drive comes in capacities starting from 500GB and goes up to 1TB. It supports SuperSpeed USB 3.0, which is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. The drive recorded a transfer speed of 113MB/s (read) and 110MB/s (write) that is at par with competitive USB 3.0 drives.

ADATA HV610

DashDrive HV610 owners can also get their hands on few software from ADATA. The software are HDDtoGO, OStoGO and 60-day trial version of Norton Internet Security. HDDtoGO is a nifty app that enhances the functionality of the hard drive. It allows users to encrypt the drive, surf internet with IE and Firefox directly from the HDD, sync items and lots more. OStoGO on the other hand helps create USB bootable Windows disks. Surprisingly, ADATA does not pre-load the apps on the drive but users will have to download it separately from their website.

The HV610 does not come with all the bells and whistles of say, Seagate’s Backup Plus USB 3.0 drive but the ADATA device gets the work done at almost the same speeds. The price of different capacity drives are as follows:

500GB – Rs. 4,000
750GB – Rs. 5,000
1TB – Rs. 6,000

Rating: 3.5/5
Pros: Design
Cons: Users need to download free apps
