Well, Google has attempted a similar thing to promote its Nexus S device but scientists from Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) will do a more serious experiment that will send an Android phone into the orbit few hundred kilometers above the planet.
The first objective for the device will be to withstand extreme temperatures at high altitudes and then the device will be used to control a 30cm-long satellite as well as take pictures of the Earth that will be sent to the team via the satellite’s radio link.
Although researchers are yet to decide which device will be used in this experiment, they’ve confirmed that it will be a sub-$450 phone available off-the-shelf. There will be no modifications and will be protected in a case inside the satellite with hole to click pictures from the phone’s camera.
