Samsung develops 1GHz dual-core Cortex A9 Processor for Mobile Devices

Samsung Orion

Samsung today announced that they’ve developed a new dual-core Applications Processor (AP) based on ARM Cortex A9. Codenamed as Orion, the AP runs at a clock speed of 1GHz and will enable device OEM manufacturers to develop devices seeking high performance with low power consumption. Samsung says the processor can be apt for mobile phones, netbooks and tablets.

Orion is designed using Samsung’s 45nm low-power process technology that comes with two Cortex A9 cores running at 1GHz with 32KB of data cache, 32KB instruction cache and 1MB L2 cache.

Orion will offer great multi-tasking support along with full HD video playback and recording at 30fps and 3D gaming capability, which is said to be 5 times superior than previous generation Samsung AP aka the Hummingbird.

Moreover, the processor has an onboard native triple display controller architecture that can support two on-device display screens and a third external display via HDMI 1.3a interface.

Orion will be available to select customers in Q4 2010 with mass production slated in H1 2011.
