Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) and Wi-Fi Alliance have agreed to cooperate on the development of the next-generation Wi-Fi certification program. In this program, both the associations will align their technology specifications so that Wi-Fi can be operated without any issues in the 60GHz frequency band. This will allow Wi-Fi to a faster short-range transmission for applications requiring gigabit speeds.
Currently Wi-Fi compliant devices work on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands however with the new tri-band Wi-Fi certified program, the products will not only be backward compatible but also support multi-gigabit wireless speeds.
WiGig released their unified wireless specifications late last year that allows devices under 60GHz band to transfer at speeds of up to 7Gbps that is 10 times faster than the prevalent Wi-Fi 802.11n
