Are PS4, Xbox 720 and Wii HD in the horizon? Well, if you believe Yves Guillemot, Chairman and CEO of Ubisoft, then yes. Yves says the online rendered gaming service (like OnLive) could turn out to be a major reason for these biggies to push out their consoles before the consumer’s expectation.
“If somebody comes out with online — if OnLive manages to make this work — we will have a next generation of systems sooner than currently planned.”
OnLive’s service runs the game on their own server and delivers the game via the user’s internet connection, effectively all the hard work being done by OnLive while a user can enjoy the best of games with minimal hardware requirements.
Guillemot also noted that the console as well as game prices could become expensive with the increase in the game’s development cost, which he reckoned to be around $60m per game as compared to $20m to $30m currently.
