This is not the first time we have heard death sentences for Blu-ray format so we’re not surprised when SanDisk’s honcho is the latest one to say it. His reasoning is that because smartphones are the hot-selling mediums for watching videos, Blu-ray can’t really survive since the phones cannot benefit from it.
Eli Harari didn’t gave the exact D-day but said “the average period of time it takes for a new technology to render an existing technology obsolete is five to seven years.” Yup, if your math is as good as mine then that’s anytime in 2014 to 2016.
On the other hand, when asked about the death of HDDs as SSDs have arrived, he had somewhat a different reply. “The disk drive industry is a very successful industry, very dynamic,” Harari said. “I think there’s room for coexistence.”
Seriously? I don’t see a reason why Blu-rays can’t coexist too.
