Nokia 1100 flawed software allows hacking?

You would’nt expect such high demand for an outdated entry level phone but Nokia’s 1100 phone is enjoying all the attention albeit in the wrong circles. Apparently, hackers in Germany are offering around 25,000 Euros for a second hand 1100 manufactured in Bochum factory in Germany.

So why is the resale price so high when the phone was available under 50 Euros? Hackers believe that 1100 can be reprogrammed to receive someone else’s calls and even messages which can be facilitated for banking fraud.

Some European countries including Germany send mTAN (mobile Transaction Authentication Number) to customers which is needed to enter online to allow transfer of money from one account to another. Though hackers have list of bank account details, acquiring mTAN passcode is a difficult task because of its short life nature. But if 1100 as they say, allows spoofing, hackers will also be able to receive mTANs.

How the hack works is still an unsolved mystery but the Dutch company, Ultrascan has promised to examine and test if the hack can be replicated.
