Tethering iPhone to work as a 3G modem for a laptop (or a PC) is not new. Users with jailbroken iPhones have already been doing that. But now AT&T Mobility’s CEO Ralph De La Vega revealed his plans to introduce iPhone tethering for AT&T users. He did not divulge any pricing or release date so our best guess says that it will coincide with iPhone firmware update to 2.2.
It goes without saying that the tether plans for users will be higher than the regular data plans assuming they will consume more bandwidth than normal iPhone surfers.
The official status will not affect those who already use their jailbroken device for tethering but it is definitely a welcoming news for those who fear jailbreaking. They are the ones who would not mind paying a little higher price for their peace of mind.
