HOOQ this week announced their new video-on-demand service for Indian consumers. A joint venture by Singtel, Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros., HOOQ offers more than 5,000 Hollywood movies and television series titles from Sony, Warner Bros., Disney, Dreamworks, and Miramax whereas around 10,000 movies and TV shows from Indian studios like YRF, UTV Disney, Rajshri, Reliance, Shemaroo, Sri Balaji, AP International, Whacked Out Media.
The service will go live in India from next month for a monthly subscription of Rs. 199 and will give users access to plethora of content on mobile phones, tablets and even PCs. HOOQ claims a single account can be used with five different devices but only two simultaneous streams can be played at the same time.
We’ve been playing with the service for a few hours now and these are some of the takeaways.
– The app allows to download content for offline viewing and though the content is protected by DRM, it allows up to five files to be downloaded onto a device but play up to two streams simultaneously.
– The UI is clean but scrolling further down shows repetitive content.
– There’s no Cast support, which means you cannot enjoy the content on a bigger screen via Chromecast (HOOQ confirmed that they’re working on it).
