ARM today announced the second generation of Mali-T600 GPUs. ARM says the new GPUs use Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC) that help to achieve up to 50 percent performance increase and can improve graphics on tablets, smartphones and even Smart TVs.
ASTC is a texture compression technique that optimizes GPU performance and helps to enhance battery life.
Second-genration Mali-T600 GPUs are based on Mali Midgard architecture and consists of Mali-T624, Mali-T628 that are targeted towards smartphones and Smart TVs whereas the Mali-T678 is aimed more towards tablets.
ARM’s licensing partners like Fujitsu, MediaTek, Rockchip, Samsung plan to integrate the new generation GPUs in their SoCs.
