Toshiba is showing off an application where a user can translate English, Chinese and Japanese quickly with the help of his cell phone. No, it does not need to go online to do the trick but Toshiba’s app can translate words and sentences using the phone’s limited resources.
The software was demonstrated on Toshiba’s TG01 and supports voice recognition, synthesis for output and two translation methods – statistical machine translation for English-Chinese, Chinese-English-Japanese and rule-based translation for the remaining ones.
The result is expectedly, not accurate all the times but PCWorld reckons trying again is the best option.
The commercial release of the app is unknown but Toshiba’s research department claims its almost done and can be sold soon.
