UPDATE: Pictures of Nexus One running Android 2.1 and T-Mobile.
So while we’re chilling out this weekend, news related to Google erupted sending the interwebs into a tizzy. It was about the Google Phone that was a rumor a week ago but suddenly came out with device’s pictures and pictures that were shot from the phone itself.
The phone is created by HTC and identified as Nexus One (code name). If you’re wondering, the phone is strikingly similar to Dragon/Passion barring the interchanged Home and Back buttons.
However, this is where things get more interesting. Mobile Review’s Eldar Murtazin posted on his Twitter account that Nexus One won’t be branded by Google. He says employees are testing features of Android 2.1 on HTC Passion (which is known as Google Phone internally) and another company (he says Apple) is trying to circulate false rumors to create a misunderstanding.
His reasoning is pretty much believable for couple of reasons. First is that Google won’t try to hamper its relationship with existing hardware partners and second is the Google’s confirmation of its employees using Android device. The post does not say anything about “its own phone” but says “a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe.”
So if we see this correctly, Google is just circulating HTC phones with Android 2.1? Or is Google creating a developer-friendly Android device just like they did for G1 and Magic? Maybe we’ll have the answer by next month.
