In a recent interview with Financial Times, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata confirms that they’re looking into a service like Amazon Kindle, giving an always-on connectivity to the DS users. Iwata states this kind of business model is appealing because the end consumer doesn’t have to bear the communications cost but only pay for the handheld (which by the way, are priced a bit higher to factor the data costs).
Though this looks good on the surface, there’s one problem. Kindle books bought are generally small in size whereas content bought for DS could run in MBs, resulting in higher data transfer costs.
Whatever the case will be, don’t pin your hopes high for this feature in the next-gen DS. Iwata says this is just “one option for the future”.
