Google yesterday revealed a few new features that you can expect in the upcoming Pixel 4 series. The new phone will come with Soli’s radar-based motion technology that will allow users to use gestures to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls. In short, users will be able to wave their hand in front of the phone to interact with it. Google says that Motion Sense will get better with time.
With regards to the secure face unlock feature, Pixel 4 will again use Soli’s technology, however, the radar will not come in the picture here. For face unlock, Pixel 4 comes with IR camera, Dot Projector and Flood Illuminator. With the help of all these, Soli will unlock the phone as soon as you pick it up. Besides this, the face unlock works in almost any orientation, even if the phone is held upside down.
Since the facial recognition technology is processed on the device, Google assures security while handling the facial data. The image data will never leave the phone and the images used for face unlock as well as the Soli sensor data will not be saved or shared with other Google services. The face data is secured in Pixel’s Titan M security chip.
So there you have it. Take a look at the video below to see how this will work in the future.
As for the announcement date, Google hasn’t mentioned yet but a safe guess would be sometime around October to tap in the upcoming holiday season.
